Get to know us a little better!
When you come in for your first visit we’ll show off our beautiful studio and introduce you to our whole team. We also need to collect some information in order to plan our best method of treatment. You can get a head start and fill out these forms ahead of time online if you would like. We’ll also explain the orthodontic process and, of course, check out your smile!
With your individual study records, Dr. Graham will create a case analysis and a comprehensive treatment plan prior to beginning treatment. The study records consist of photographs and x-rays of your teeth.
Dr. Graham will review all of the possible treatment options available to you, discuss your concerns and our common shared treatment objectives and the orthodontic method by which these goals will be accomplished. We hope both the patient and the parent of our younger patients (preferably both parents) are there, since we will talk about everyone’s responsibilities. You are gonna love this!
your first visit
We can’t wait to meet you and welcome you to our office! Our team is committed to making your treatment as easy and enjoyable as possible, in a friendly and welcoming environment.
During your first visit, we’ll begin by taking diagnostic pictures and x-rays, you’ll get acquainted with the process and procedures for orthodontics; we’ll discuss your customized treatment options in detail, probable treatment length, and associated costs. The initial consultation is free.
Treatment costs can vary widely, depending on the patient and case. All treatment plans are customized for each individual and associated costs depend on the severity of necessary treatment.
At your consultation, we will discuss treatment fees, insurance coverage and financial arrangements in detail. We offer many payment options, all of which are individualized by you. From zero interest financing, low monthly payments, FLEX plan utilization, and many other options. Our goal is to never let financial constraints get in the way of excellent orthodontic treatment.
We work with most major insurance companies and will look into your coverage and file the necessary paperwork on your behalf.
Salt Lake City's Leading Orthodontic Care
Does my family dentist have to schedule my appointment with the orthodontist?
Absolutely not! Unlike many other specialists, orthodontists do not require a referral to treat their patients. We do require that you currently have a family dentist, as we’re big on being team players. If you don’t have a dentist, we will be happy to refer one to you.
How long does the average treatment take?
Everyone is unique, and each course of treatment has a unique duration. Most patients are treated in around a year to a year and a half. There are certain treatment options that Dr. Graham is experienced in that can bring a two-year treatment time down to around six months. Feel free to ask about these during your exam.
How much will braces cost? Are financing options available? How does my insurance work?
Every treatment scenario is unique and individual, and as such, we really need to do a full examination before we can tell you the price of treatment. What we CAN tell you is that it will cost more than five dollars. We have several financing options available which are affordable, convenient and helpful. As far as insurance goes, many dental plans offer a lifetime orthodontic benefit. We will be happy to check that for you during your visit.
Is orthodontic treatment painful?
Hurt is relative. A giant boulder falling on your toe? Now THAT hurts. Braces? Not so much. The first few days of braces are “achy”, but soon after that there is little to no pain at all. The days of “tightening” braces are over if you are lucky enough to have an orthodontist that uses the Damon System. Seriously, this isn’t like you remember.
Can orthodontics be started while a child still has baby teeth?
Absolutely, and often times this is the best time to start. So many times we see teens or adults and we say to ourselves “wow, if we could have only treated you before your teens you wouldn’t need extractions, or surgery”. The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that every child be evaluated BEFORE the age of seven for this very reason. Many times, we can just observe these youngsters and treat them once when all of their permanent teeth erupt. However, in many cases we can avoid long treatment times, surgery and extractions by doing an early, “interceptive” phase of orthodontics. This phase focuses on making room for teeth, correcting early bite problems, and improving facial profiles. Dr. Graham has done this on his own children.
Will I need to have teeth extracted for braces?
Most likely no. For years, most orthodontists extracted four bicuspid teeth as a routine part of their treatment. In the hands of Dr. Graham, permanent tooth extractions are VERY rare.
How often will appointments be?
Generally, you will have the pleasure of seeing Dr. Graham’s smiling face about every six to eight weeks.
Can I schedule all of my appointments after school?
We thankfully have LOTS of patients, and they would all like to have their appointments after school or after work. We will work tirelessly to schedule the most convenient appointment times possible. However, occasionally we will need to schedule the longer appointments during school and work hours. For school, we will provide a doctor’s excuse… for work, you’re on your own.
Can I drop my child off for an appointment?
Yes, but please be sure to come in when you pick them up so that we can thoroughly update you on what we did, what’s next, and where we are in their treatment. If you don’t pick them up, then they will be doing yard work at Dr. Graham’s house until their next appointment.
What happens at a typical visit?
Once the patient is seated, the technician reviews the chart to see what is planned for the day’s appointment. Dr. Graham is consulted prior to commencing work, then the necessary procedures are performed. Upon completion of the day’s work, Dr. Graham checks and reviews the work performed and plans the next appointment. All questions are answered and comfort is assured prior to the patient leaving. Most visits end with a review of the day’s work with the accompanying parent.
How long is an average visit in the office?
Most visits are about 20 minutes in length. Appointments which require the application of any braces can take longer, whether it is the initial visit or during treatment. Most of these brace application visits are performed during the morning hours as they tend to take longer. The initial banding (i.e. the day braces are first placed) usually takes about an hour and a half.
What happens if a patient is not ready for treatment?
We place all patients who are not ready for treatment in our “Orthodontic Guidance Program.” This allows patients to be recalled to the office periodically, in order to assess their status in terms of orthodontic development. It is our goal not to start any patient treatment until it is the most opportune time to treat them. By waiting for this time, a treatment plan which is the most efficient and economical can be delivered. In a sense, we wait until we can do the best care, at the best time, for the best value!
What happens if an appointment must be missed or canceled?
We request our patients to call us as soon as possible if a change in schedules arises. If the office is closed, you may leave a message to cancel your appointment on our answering machine. You may then call back to reschedule or request the office to call you at your convenience. If appointments are canceled in adequate time, patients requesting sooner visits can often be accommodated. The sooner an appointment is rescheduled, the sooner a new appointment can be made which will keep treatment progressing at the rate necessary for a speedy finish.
One of the largest causes for extended treatment times is missing appointments. Delaying rescheduling delays progress even further. So, if an appointment must be missed please call to cancel and reschedule as soon as possible.
What is considered an emergency appointment? How are those handled?
Okay, emergency is kind of a strong word. Sometimes brackets come loose – this is not an emergency and often can wait until the next appointment. But anything that causes pain, like a pokey wire, is an emergency and we’re all over it! We have a 24-hour answering service that will put you in touch with a staff member if you have any situation causing pain. Don’t be shy!
Why should you choose an orthodontic specialist?
Really? You have to ask? Orthodontists were chosen from the tops of their classes and have 2-3 years additional training after dental school that enables them to provide their patients with professional, personalized treatments. Since teeth, and in many cases the entire facial complex, are permanently changed by orthodontic treatment, it is important that the diagnosis be appropriate and that the treatment be properly completed. The difference is in the results.
Do I need to see my family dentist while in braces?
Yes, yes and yes! We’re a team, and we need your family dentist to keep your smile spectacularly clean and beautiful. Sometimes we even ask that you go more frequently than normal. You’re welcome.

Life with Braces
Eating with Braces
It’s not going to be easy at first and in the beginning, foods you can eat will be limited. You’ll want to stick to foods that are soft, fluffy and easily mashed up. Pancakes, oatmeal, bananas, soups, cooked vegetables, applesauce, mashed potatoes, mac & cheese, and soft ice cream – just to suggest a few. Stay away from foods that are hard, crunchy, sticky or tough.
Foods to Avoid
Some foods have a tendency to break appliances and cause a lot of problems during the course of our treatment. Because of this, you will be on a liquid diet for your entire treament. KIDDDING!!!!! Please avoid these foods while wearing braces. Not kidding. Avoid these:
Sticky – gum, caramel, tootsie rolls, peanut butter, toffee, taffy, granola bars, frozen candy bars
Hard – apples, carrots and other raw vegetables, chewing ice, nuts
Crunchy – popcorn, chips, tacos, celery
Tough – bagels, corn on the cob, sandwiches, steak, ribs, beef jerky
There are a few tricks around some problem foods. You can cook your vegetables to make them softer, cut your corn off the cob, and slice apples and sandwiches into small, bite-sized pieces.
If you’re in doubt about a particular food, ask the doctor.
Your mouth is going to feel sensitive and a bit sore when you first get your braces put on. To help alleviate the soreness, you can rinse your mouth with a salt-water solution or take an over-the-counter analgesic. If your braces are rubbing or poking your mouth, you can use dental wax (available at the office or your local drugstore) to cover problem areas and prevent blisters.
Loosening of Teeth
Part of the process of creating your new, beautiful smile is moving your teeth; to move them, they need to loosen up first. “Loose teeth” are a natural part of the process. Once your teeth are in the right place, they will settle into their new position.
Loose Wire, Bracket or Band
Inevitably, something is going to come loose. A bracket will loosen or a wire may pop out of place. Don’t worry!
If it’s a flexible wire, you might be able to push it back into place using tweezers. If you can’t move it with tweezers, you can use a pencil eraser or the back of a pen to push the offending wire down. Dental wax will also be your friend; place a small amount on the spot to cover the problem area. Next, schedule an appointment to have the wire, bracket, or band repaired.
Care of Appliances: Brushing
It is always important to brush and floss your teeth to keep them clean and healthy – with braces, it’s more important than ever. Consistent brushing and flossing will ensure that your gums and teeth remain healthy throughout your treatment.
Dr. Graham exceeded my expectations! He will be seeing all six of my children in the future! Thanks!
brushing & flossing
Using a soft-bristled toothbrush, begin by brushing the outside of your teeth and braces holding the brush tilted at a 45 degree angle. Brush along the top and bottom of the braces using light to moderate pressure, making sure you cover every surface very carefully.
Don’t forget to brush the teeth all the way in the back and behind your back molars. It’s a good practice to brush for three minutes at least twice a day. Using a timer or singing along to a song will help you keep track of your time.
Flossing at least once a day is very important for good dental hygiene and to keep your teeth healthy. Flossing with braces may seem difficult at first. To floss properly, you will need to thread the floss under the archwire. This can be done in two ways – either by threading the floss through on your own or using a floss threader to thread the floss under the wire.
When threading the floss, it is a good practice to start by pushing the floss vertically from the top to the bottom on your upper teeth and from the bottom to the top on your bottom teeth, always threading away from your gums. Once threaded, carefully floss around each tooth and gum, moving the floss up and down, just like you did without braces.
types of braces
Damon System Braces
The Damon System bracket is self-ligating, so it eliminates the need for elastic ties to keep the wire in. Without a tie, the braces stay clean and friction is reduced, allowing your treatment to progress more efficiently and with less discomfort along the way. Damon System braces are available with both a metal and a clear option.
The Damon Clear bracket is the most aesthetically clear brace on the market. It blends beautifully with your teeth and features a clear slide mechanism that conceals the wire. Because the slide is used in place of elastic ties, the braces stay clean and clear throughout treatment and reduce the overall appointments needed to complete treatment.
Invisalign is the ultimate in terms of aesthetic treatment options. We use custom molded clear trays to move your teeth to the ideal position. Because they are removable, patient compliance is extremely important with aligners. Invisalign is a terrific option for working professionals or patients seeking a discreet solution to improve their smile, however it is not ideal for every case.

types of appliances
Forsus (Bite Fixer)
This appliance is used in overbite cases after leveling and aligning your bite. We use a spring that is connected to the brackets to bring your jaw forward.
We use a Herbst in more severe overbite cases as an alternative to jaw surgery. This appliance can even be used on adults and is believed to stimulate lower jaw growth, which delivers stability after your braces come off.
Elastics (Rubber Bands)
We connect small rubber bands from one tooth to another to improve positioning.
Any device that is used in your mouth to change the shape of your jaw or move your teeth is referred to as an appliance.
An appliance used in underbite cases to advance your upper arch forward, it is used with adolescents before the age of 9 as an attempt to avoid later jaw surgery.
Typically used after an expander, this fixed retainer runs across your palate to hold your teeth in place. It can also be used to hold space when a primary tooth is lost earlier than usual.
This lingual retainer is used on the lower arch to hold space after your phase I treatment. Similar to the TPA Appliance, we also use it in instances of early loss of a primary tooth.
This is typically used after your treatment is complete. We bond wires to the inside of your upper and lower arches to hold your teeth in place. These are most often used in severe cases, along with clear retainers.
Wear your retainers full time, until the doctor instructs otherwise.
Take your retainers out when eating…and always put retainers in their case! (Most appliances are lost in school lunchrooms or restaurants.)
Clean retainers thoroughly once a day with a toothbrush and toothpaste. Use warm but not hot water. Brushing retainers removes the plaque and eliminates odors. Efferdent® or other orthodontic appliance cleaners can be used but do not take the place of brushing.
When retainers are not in your mouth they should ALWAYS be in a retainer case. Pets love to chew on them!
Initially, you may find it difficult to speak. Practice speaking, reading, or singing out loud to get used to them faster.
Retainers are breakable, so treat them with care. If retainers are lost or broken, call us immediately.
If you have any questions or concerns about your retainers, or your retainers need adjusting, call us. Do not try to adjust them yourself.
Always bring your retainers to your appointments.
Retainer replacement is expensive … with proper care they will last for years!
Remove retainers when swimming.
Keep retainers away from hot water, hot car dashboards, pockets, the washing machine, and napkins.
You took a chance on a single mother by allowing me to make payments each month. Dr. Graham and his staff became like an extended family. Thank you for caring about us.
All of Sugarhouse's staff is awesome and they promote a professional and fun atmosphere. It does lessen the pain if there is some. Thanks everyone. You are loved and appreciated!
I have a very full schedule and your staff made accommodations “numerous” times! Thank you!
Slow down there partner; let’s make a proper diagnosis.
Are you experiencing EXTREME pain? Is some part of your appliance, or bracket damaged? Are wires poking into your gums or cheeks? If so, give us a call right away. We are eager to help you and do not wish you to be in any unnecessary pain whatsoever. Please call 801.917.GRIN.
However, if you’ve recently had your braces tightened and you’re experiencing some soreness — that is most likely not an emergency. We recommend you take a pain reliever such as Tylenol or Advil. If your pain persists for more than a day or so then give us a call.
The Damon System
They get us pretty excited. Self-ligating brackets have changed everything in orthodontics and are used in the Damon system. This technology allows for some real advantages such as:
Far fewer tooth extractions
Faster treatment times
Dr. Graham is one of only a very few orthodontists worldwide who teaches other orthodontists how to use the Damon System. He also teaches advanced courses for those orthodontists already using the system. Congratulations, you have found one of the best!

Surgical orthodontics is a combined treatment by our doctors and an oral surgeon to correct jaw abnormalities. These issues are determined after reviewing the patient’s X-rays and models.
The orthodontist initially levels and aligns the teeth in the jawbone, then the oral surgeon positions the jaws into a more normal position to allow the bite to come together ideally. This procedure results in the improved ability to chew, speak, and breathe, while also delivering tremendous facial aesthetics.
We embrace the latest in orthodontic technologies to reduce the overall need for this method, however it can still be required in those with improper bites, as well as those with facial aesthetic concerns. All growth must be complete before jaw surgery can be performed (jaw growth is usually complete by 16 years with girls and 18 with boys), however it is very common to begin correcting tooth position while a patient is still growing.
The temporomandibular joint connects the jaw to the skull. Pain in this area is characterized as Temporomandibular Disorder. This joint is similar to many others in the body, and as such, is susceptible to conditions like ankylosis, arthritis, and dislocations.
TMD Symptoms Include:
Biting/chewing difficulty or discomfort
Neck and shoulder pain
Headaches/earaches in the morning
Jaw pain or tenderness
Reduced ability to open/close the mouth
Should you notice any of these symptoms, please contact our office. Our specialists can diagnose and provide you with treatment options.
Invisalign allows you to straighten your teeth by using a series of clear trays that comfortably slide over your teeth and gently move them into place. No brackets, no wires, no kidding. This solution is comfortable and allows for easy oral hygiene too. Dr. Graham has had them, so has his wife, and many, many patients. Remarkable!
